Where did Phog Allen get his nickname?

Forrest Allen, regarded as basketball's first great coach, played for James Naismith, the man who invented basketball.

Before coaching at KU, Phog was a baseball umpire. He was known for his booming foghorn voice, so he earned the nickname "Phog." Thereafter, people generally referred to him as Phog Allen.
